ABOUT THE PRIZE NAMES
CLARK ASHTON SMITH POETRY PRIZE. Smith (1893-1961) was arguably one of the most
noteworthy writers to spring from the Sierra Foothills. A long time resident of Auburn, California, he wrote novels,
short stories, and always, throughout his life, poetry.
THE EULALIE PRIZE. Mary Eulalie Shannon (1824-1854) was California's first published
female poet. She lived in Auburn, died during childbirth, and was buried in the town's cemetery.
JACKSON GREGORY POETRY PRIZE. Gregory
(1882-1943) was an American storyteller, he often lived in the place where the plot was laid and
became for a time a native son. He wrote many of his westerns while living in Auburn, California.
