ABOUT THE PRIZE NAMES

CLARK ASHTON SMITH POETRY PRIZE.  Smith (1893-1961) was arguably one of the most noteworthy writers to spring from the Sierra Foothills. A long time resident of Auburn, California, he wrote novels, short stories, and always, throughout his life, poetry.

THE EULALIE PRIZE. Mary Eulalie Shannon (1824-1854) was California's first published female poet.  She lived in Auburn, died during childbirth, and was buried in the town's cemetery.

JACKSON GREGORY POETRY PRIZE. Gregory (1882-1943) was an American storyteller who often lived in the place where the his story was set.  He wrote many of his westerns while living in Auburn, California.
