to spring from the Sierra Foothills. A long time resident of Auburn, California, he wrote novels, short
stories, and always, throughout his life, poetry.
** Mary "Eulalie" (Fee) Shannon (1824-1854) California's first published female
poet, lived in Auburn was buried in the town's cemetery.
*** Jackson Gregory (1882-1943)
"Mr. Gregory has won a place as one of the most entertaining & successful American story tellers. The
backgrounds of his tales are authentic for he 'lives his stories' by locating in the place where the plot is laid &
becoming for the time a native son." He wrote many of his westerns while living in Auburn, California.
