* Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) arguably one of the most noteworthy writers to spring from the Sierra Foothills. A long time resident of Auburn, California, he wrote novels, short stories, and always, throughout his life, poetry.

** Mary "Eulalie" (Fee) Shannon (1824-1854) California's first published female poet, lived in Auburn was buried in the town's cemetery.
